Gelcoats are composite materials based on unsaturated polyester resins used to create decorative and protective coatings. As a rule, gelcoat is a curable resin with the addition of a dye (colored paste). Gelcoat is applied first to the matrix, and after it cures, reinforcing layers (fiberglass or carbon fiber) impregnated with a binder (polyester resin) are applied on top of it. Thus, after removing the product from the matrix, the front surface of the product is coated with gelcoat. Specialized gelcoats can also make the surface of products resistant to mechanical influences and aggressive environments. They are widely used in shipbuilding.
